... there have been Trolls underneath

I don't know what it is about JU -- probably because, even in "Internet time", it's a pretty young community. But this place just loves to feed the Trolls [q.v. Link].

I don't mean just offer them sustenance -- the users seem to actively go out of their way to find posts that are offensive/ridiculous to them and actually help promote these articles by participating in flame wars.

I doubt everybody here is that much of a n00b -- everyone probably knows about the Scoring System (Link).

We've all been flamed -- especially in some of the more heated political debates here. But just ignore the obvious trolls -- including their posts/replies and their articles. No moderation system can really control them but giving them your valuable time and attention rewards them with what they want the most.

Good advice. Often hard to do because our base instinct is to lash out. At times I have to simply walk away before I respond, and more times than I can count I have actually closed the browser windoe after typing paragraphs.

Nevertheless, it benefits us all to leave them be.

Amen to that! You can usually spot a troll because they instantly accuse you of being a troll if you disagree with them. It's pathetic. I hate reading comments to my posts because I know somebody is going to go out of their way to misinterpret me deliberately. Unfortunately it's always been like this for the 15 years or so I've been on Newsgroups or forums.

Maybe there's an infrastructure issue here -- a lot of "mature" forums like Slashdot have the less subtle trolls under control pretty quick after a topic is posted. Maybe the moderation system here needs tweaking ...

OR, maybe its a basic design issue, e.g., the fact that JU is syndication oriented might provide cover for the trolls to stay in the foreground for at least a little while.
